√ Other: I don’t care, but if it is distracting people will be looking at it rather than listening to the candidate.

Is there anything a candidate might wear that would cause them to be instantly out of the running? If you have any funny stories about horrifying interview outfits, we’d love to hear them.

I think there should be a certain level of professionalism. No ratty jeans, no t-shirts, no guys pants that show off their boxers, but I haven’t seen any of these in interviews here.

If what they wear is too distracting, it can cause people to ignore what the candidate is saying. Also, whatever you wear, be confident and comfortable in it. Playing with jewelry and clothes during the interview is definitely problematic.

Is there anything a candidate might wear that would cause them to be instantly out of the running? If you have any funny stories about horrifying interview outfits, we’d love to hear them.

We had a candidate come to the interview in capris and flipflops. This was for a management position. It didn’t put her out of the running, other things did, but it felt disrespectful.

Out of the running? Bare midriff, short shorts very low cut tops for women. Same for men. 😉 What it comes down to is that whatever outfit somebody wears should show respect of self and the institution for which application is being made.

Can you share any stories about how a candidate nailed the proper interview outfit, especially if your organization does not expect suits?

I did have a candidate come in wearing a very simple, tasteful skirt and blouse with a vintage handbag (small, clean lines). Her heels were not too high. This was for an entry level position and its simplicity gave a suit-like feel and helped project confidence in herself. Very nicely done.

Consciously? As long as someone looks appropriate and not casual, I’m good. Unconsciously? If their dress doesn’t stand out in bad way it is probably okay.

It doesn’t necessarily affect my decision, but it would certainly affect the decision of others who work at my institution. I see the appeal of wearing your personality as a sort of sign to let others know how you will want to be once you begin work, but also be prepared for the rejection based on that alone.

I try not to judge people on appearance– it’s bitten me too many times. We are a faith-based institution, so something that showed disregard/ignorance of that would be a no-no (hooker-wear, some t-shirt slogans). Ratty clothes wouldn’t impress me much.

I hardly pay attention if their outfit isn’t calling attention to itself.

Florida tends to be more informal because of the heat (no pantyhose are expected; suits/ties are rarer) and we are informal even for Florida. I like that 🙂

Jeans – we interview a lot of college students for our page/clerk position, and many come in wearing clothes a step up from jeans, so the applicant has to be really awesome for us to look past jeans. It’s an easy way to narrow down the field. Unfortunately, I have no funny stories! I wish I did!

Can you share any stories about how a candidate nailed the proper interview outfit, especially if your organization does not expect suits?

No stories but I read the blog Academichic and turned to that for my own interview wear. Pretty much anything on that website would qualify as proper interview attire. Unique accessories make people memorable and let them express themselves a bit – so throw on a coordinating scarf or fun earrings, by all means. A fun print dress with a solid color cardigan is always a winner.

It must be tasteful and neat in all cases. Seeing a little bit of personality is always nice, whether it is shown through accessories or use of color. I like to see someone who is comfortable (if you’re not comfortable wearing heels, don’t wear them!) and confident in what they wear and who is a bit expressive.

I typically wear a polo or button down with my library’s logo, a sweater (it’s always freezing in the library), and trousers or a skirt. If it’s summer, usually a dress and the ever-present sweater.

flip flops, ripped jeans, clothes with overtly political slogans would raise serious red flags. I’ve had someone keep on an outdoor hooded coat throughout an interview, with the hood up, which made me wonder what they were hiding.

How does what a candidate wears affect your hiring decision?

The way someone presents themselves reflects the way they think about themselves, their level of self confidence, their level of care and attention to detail, and how much they respect themselves and the interview process – no wonder it has such an influence!
I think that any well coordinated, smart, outfit that reflects the level of formality at the organisation, with a high level of personal grooming, would positively affect my hiring decision.
