Inappropriately casual and/or sloppy attire – sweatpants, etc. This MIGHT be okay for a page or shelver if the applicant is teenaged (i.e. too young to know better), but anyone applying for a professional or paraprofessional position should take the opportunity seriously enough to wear something that looks reasonably nice.

√ Other: Yes, to some extent; a director candidate should dress better than a circ sub, for instance. But this isn’t a hard and fast rule for me.

Very little unless it’s pretty inappropriate. Sometimes the clothes give an impression of the kind of personality the applicant has (e.g. wearing a sweater-vest and tie rather than a suit) but that only applies as far as possible “fit” with the organization goes.

I wear my normal library-wear, which is business casual. (I try to make sure to select one of my “nicer” outfits.)

What Candidates Should Wear

Should the candidate wear a suit to the interview?

Other: I truly feel that the candidate should wear a suit if–and only if–he or she feels most comfortable, authentic, and “in control” in a suit. It isn’t necessarily about my institution (we have suite wearers and non-suit wearers at all levels of librarian, from the ref desk to the dean’s office), but more about personal preference/comfort level for me.

Other: Still on the same level of professionalism as a suite, but slightly more relaxed.

Other: This question makes me think we are seriously crazy. Bare legs are fine. Pantyhose is fine. Tights are fine.

It doesn’t, and it shouldn’t. I more concerned about (a) can he/she do the job? and (b) will he/she “fit” the organization/team, complementing and enhancing it? Perhaps I’m too laid back.

Other: We don’t have a true, set-in-stone dress code, but the majority of the organization tends to be a bit business casual. That said, I do wear jeans (dark, no holes) to work from time to time. I don’t tend to wear t-shirts (unless it’s a university/mascot t-shirt, maybe during big games).

A mask and cape… Seriously, as long as the candidate shows they have taken care over their appearance that day (showing commitment to the interview) it doesn’t matter what they wear.

Exception is higher level posts where they are expected to talk to senior staff inside and out of the service… need them to at least vaguely conform to the norm in that case.

I have not been on a search committee, but our staff gets to meet with and ask questions of our interview candidates throughout the day.

√ Other: Depends. From my understanding, academic libraries want candidates to wear suits. This may be different for other types of libraries.

Anyone walking in with jeans or sneakers, I would automatically discount. Or flip-flops, but I am of the opinion that you should NEVER wear flip-flops. Anything low-cut on women, shoulder-bearing on men. Anything with sequins.

Can you share any stories about how a candidate nailed the proper interview outfit, especially if your organization does not expect suits?

We had a candidate come in with structured, fitted black slacks, a black long-sleeve button-down shirt, and cowboy boots. She also had a really nice neckerchief on. I was floored by her outfit. I have always been instructed by mentors to always wear suits at academic library interviews, no question. Her casual outfit threw me off, but at the same time, I felt it was appropriate and showcased her personality more. It’s what she’d probably wear actually coming to work. She was put-together and professional, while still being herself. Besides, who wears a suit to work anymore?

√ Yes, the higher the position, the more formal I expect the candidate to dress

√ Other: Arty stuff should be in moderation, I would argue. One statement piece, like a necklace or bracelet, I think can work. Too much would be distracting for me.

√ Other: A little personality is good, but I vote for mostly neutral.

How does what a candidate wears affect your hiring decision?

Dressing in a clean and professional manner shows courtesy to the staff members at the interview and, in my mind, respect for the position for which this person is applying and the institution he’s visiting. If he can’t make a bit of a show of it for an interview, I can’t help but question how much this person wants the job.

I Always Look at a Person’s Shoes

T-shirts are not an option. Also I always look at a person’s shoes – are they clean, free from scratches and tears and holes. If they are completely worn out it says to me that don’t pay attention to detail.

I also pay attention to see if there hair is clean and neat. It doesn’t have to be in styled in the most current fashion, but I expect it to be clean and combed or brushed.

Can you share any stories about how a candidate nailed the proper interview outfit, especially if your organization does not expect suits?

I have seen candidates show up in polished and professional attire – including starched white dress shirts for men and suspenders under a sport coat. This was a plus size male who looked completely professional and who looked like he had gone the extra mile. He ended up getting the job, by the way.

It depends upon the level of responsibility of the job and if the person being hired will be representing the library to various levels of the community. For instance, will this person represent the Dean of the Library at fundraising events, etc. The responsibilities involved in the position will play a role in the way I think the interviewee should be dressed for the interview.

Dress codes are very touchy subjects for many people. Sometimes as the director, it is difficult to enforce a strict dress code if you have inherited a staff that has not any type of dress code enforced over the years. It is also difficult and seems unfair to require people to dress a certain way when pay scales are low and it could possibly cause a financial hardship on certain staff if a stricter dress code was implemented.

How does what a candidate wears affect your hiring decision?

I was on a hiring committee about 6 months ago, and I can only remember one out of 4 interviewees’ outfits, only because I thought it was a little frumpy. I think keeping your outfit fairly neutral will ensure that people don’t remember you for what you wore, but how you interviewed or presented. Also, I would hope that a candidate dresses the way they expect to dress when they come to work. In that sense, I think it is unrealistic to expect that either men or women will wear a suit to work everyday here at my library, therefore I don’t expect that they must wear one to an interview.

I may wear a dress (even a bright pink one) or a nice button-down shirt with trousers. I just wear what I usually wear to work, but make sure it is one of my nicer outfits (i.e., not jeans).
